Webometrics July 2026: Unismuh Makassar is the best private higher education institution in Eastern Indonesia, ranking 61st nationally, and 1646th worldwide.
The University of Muhammadiyah (Unismuh) Makassar's efforts to strengthen its academic quality, scientific publications, and digital visibility have once again been recognized internationally. This is reflected in the July 2026 edition of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, which places Unismuh as the leading private higher education institution in East Indonesia.
Based on the ranking published by Webometrics.org and accessed on July 27, 2026, Unismuh Makassar ranks 61st nationally and 1646th globally. In the indicators assessment, Unismuh ranks 1180th worldwide for Impact (Visibility), 4631st worldwide for Openness (Transparency), and 1711th worldwide for Excellence.
This achievement solidifies Unismuh's position as the leading private higher education institution in East Indonesia, encompassing Sulawesi, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, and Papua.
In Makassar itself, Unismuh is ranked below two state universities. Universitas Hasanuddin ranks 12th nationally and 806th globally, while Universitas Negeri Makassar ranks 26th nationally and 1070th globally.
Dr. Abd Rakhim Nanda, MT, IPU, Rector of Unismuh Makassar, stated that these results reflect the university's consistent efforts to build an open, productive, and impactful academic culture. He emphasized that this achievement is not the result of a single unit's work, but rather the synergy of the entire academic community continuously striving to improve the quality of education, research, community service, and scientific publications.
"Alhamdulillah, this achievement is a source of joy for the entire Unismuh family. However, what is more important is how this achievement can be used as motivation to continuously improve academic work and expand its benefits to society," he said on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
Dr. Abd Rakhim Nanda, MT, IPU, added that strengthening the university's reputation must be built through widely accessible works. Therefore, the institution's website, repository, scientific journals, and other academic platforms need to be continuously developed as centers for disseminating knowledge.
Meanwhile, Dr. Burhanuddin, MSi, Vice Rector IV of Unismuh Makassar, believes that the Webometrics results provide a clear direction for the university's future development. He stated that digital reputation is not only measured by the amount of information published on the website, but also by the quality of research, openness of academic data, and the influence of scientific publications produced by academics.
Therefore, each faculty, department, institution, and unit is encouraged to actively document various academic achievements through the university's official channels so that they can be easily found, accessed, and utilized by the public and the scientific community.
"Strengthening international rankings must be a shared agenda. All units have the same responsibility in building a high-quality academic ecosystem while increasing the visibility of the institution," he said.
Similarly, Prof. Hartono Bancong, PhD, Chairman of Unismuh Global Excellence Center (UGEC), stated that the Webometrics results should be read as an evaluation instrument to see the university's position and determine the strengthening steps in each assessment indicator.
He explained that the Impact indicator shows the broader reach of Unismuh's academic content through citations from various external domains. On the other hand, the Openness indicator can be further strengthened through the optimization of the Google Scholar profiles of faculty members, consistency of author affiliation, and integration of the institution's repository with scientific journals.
As for the Excellence indicator, the focus of development is on improving the quality of published research in internationally renowned journals, which has a greater opportunity to obtain citations.
Webometrics is one of the university ranking systems that assesses institutional performance through three main indicators, namely Impact with a weight of 50%, Openness at 10%, and Excellence at 40%. These three indicators are designed to measure the digital visibility, knowledge openness, and the quality and influence of scientific publications of each higher education institution. For Unismuh Makassar, the July 2026 ranking is not only a reflection of increased position, but also emphasizes the university's commitment to building a productive, collaborative, and globally competitive academic ecosystem. Through strengthening research, publications, innovation, and the use of information technology, Unismuh continues to strive to contribute to the development of scientific knowledge and the advancement of society.
